New 4-H Clubs in Siler
City
September 2006
We successfully launched our 4-H clubs in Siler City early in the
summer. A total of 20 children who are on our waiting list for mentors
participated in a 4-H project entitled "Public Adventures"
where we learned about citizenship, democracy and our community.
The enthusiastic 4-H members, who range in age from 5-19, went
on litter patrol in town, started a homework club, raised money
at a carwash ($110 in the rain!) and are working on creating a community
watch program at Landreth-Siler Park. They toured the Police Department,
took a walking tour of the town, played kickball, met with community
leaders and had many hours of meaningful interaction learning about
respect, giving back to the community and leadership skills. We
have discovered some natural born leaders in these clubs that would
have otherwise gone unnoticed.
Many thanks to Sarah Kotzian from Chatham Co. 4-H who helped us
get the project off the ground and provided us with materials and
resources. Donald Dones, Siler City Parks and Recreation Director,
who is clearly committed to helping Siler kids reach their potential,
regularly participates in the club and allows us to use the Community
Center at no charge. Jodi York, CCT! volunteer, and the parents
of these rising stars helped in many ways and we are very grateful
for their involvement. We welcome new members and volunteers to
ANY Chatham County 4-H club (there are 4). Call me!
